We moved – after 40 years in the same house. I had the perfect darkroom – it was even 8×10 (that would be feet). But I was using it less and less, partially because standing for long periods was hard on my back, partially due to the ease of digital. Now, for nearly the first time since I was a teenager I don’t have a darkroom or ready access to one. (Time to count: 1. St. Pius X, 2. Journalism Department at San Fernando Valley State College, 3. bathroom on Rinaldi, 4. community darkroom in San Jose, 5. laundry room on Mendocino Drive, 6. garage on Richard Court, 7. storeroom on Laurel, 8. remodeled storeroom that was perfect.) I even donated my enlarger to Mendocino College, which felt like giving away a child. But it’s OK. I intend to still shoot and develop film and finally really figure out what my Epson 600 can do. I’m thinking that there are some hidden gems in my decades of negatives, and as soon as we finish unpacking (and selling the old house) I’ll become an expert at scanning. Can’t wait.
